‘My confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump administration,’ Gaetz states.
Former Florida congressman Matt Gaetz announced on Thursday that he is withdrawing himself from consideration as President-elect Donald Trumpâs choice for U.S. attorney general.
âMy confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump administration,â Gaetz wrote in a
statement posted on the social media platform X.
Gaetz mentioned that he had met with senators the previous day and had received “thoughtful feedback” and “incredible support” from many of them.
However, Gaetz had been under intense scrutiny from congressional, federal, and media sources over allegations that would have complicated his confirmation as the nationâs top federal prosecutor.
In April 2021, the House Ethics Committee announced an investigation into allegations against Gaetz, including sexual misconduct, illegal drug use, inappropriate sharing of images or videos on the House floor, misuse of state identification records, personal use of campaign funds, and bribery, as
reported.
The committee
announced on Wednesday that it would not release the final report at this time.
Last year, Gaetz stated that the Department of Justice (DOJ) had concluded a sex trafficking investigation with no charges against him. He has vehemently denied the claims from the ethics panel’s investigation, pointing out that the DOJ closed that inquiry as well.
A statement from Gaetz’s office last year confirmed, “The Department of Justice has informed Congressman Gaetzâs attorneys that their investigation has concluded and he will not face any charges.”
Recently, an attorney involved in a civil case brought by a Gaetz associate was informed about unauthorized access to case documents by an unknown individual.
As of now, there have been no public statements from Trump or his campaign regarding Gaetz’s decision to withdraw from consideration. The Epoch Times reached out to the Trump campaign for comment on Thursday.
