Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has announced that articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas will be presented on April 10, with Senators being sworn in as jurors the following day.
In a letter to fellow Democrats on April 5, Mr. Schumer revealed that the House impeachment managers will deliver Mr. Mayorkas’s articles of impeachment to the Senate on April 10. All Senators will be sworn in as jurors the day after the articles are presented, with Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray presiding over the trial.
The trial will officially begin when the House impeachment managers present the articles of impeachment to the 100 senators in the upper chamber and make their case against Mr. Mayorkas. The first article charges him with “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law,” while the second article accuses him of “breach of public trust.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) had requested Mr. Schumer to schedule the trial “expeditiously” in a letter dated March 28. He accused Mr. Mayorkas of failing to enforce U.S. immigration laws and misleading the public about the severity of the border crisis.
President Biden and his administration have defended their actions on the border, attributing the crisis to various factors such as a broken immigration system, crime and corruption in immigrants’ home countries, and climate change.
It is estimated that over 10 million illegal immigrants have crossed the border since President Biden took office. Republicans have criticized Biden administration policies for exacerbating the border crisis and have called for measures such as ending the “catch-and-release” policy, expanding expedited removals, and reinstating border wall construction.
Under the Biden administration’s catch-and-release program, over 70 percent of illegal immigrants are being released into U.S. communities after an initial arrest, as admitted by Mr. Mayorkas.
Republicans have expressed concerns about the national security implications of the influx of illegal immigrants. Border Patrol agents have caught illegal border crossers carrying explosives, raising fears of potential terrorism threats.
