The Mega Millions jackpot has reached an estimated $800 million with a cash option of $401.8 million for the upcoming Tuesday drawing, as no one matched all the winning numbers in Friday night’s drawing.
The last time the jackpot was won was in Illinois on June 4, with a ticket worth $552 million.
Only two Mega Millions jackpots have been won this year. Prior to the Illinois win, a $1.1 billion winning ticket was bought in New Jersey in March, which remains unclaimed. Winners in New Jersey have up to a year to claim their prize.
Mega Millions tickets are available for purchase in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings take place at 11 p.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays in Atlanta, Georgia, with tickets priced at $2 each. Half of the proceeds from ticket sales stay in the state where the ticket was sold.
The odds of winning the jackpot are more than 302 million to one, while the overall odds of winning any Mega Millions prize are 1 in 24.
The largest Mega Millions jackpot to date was $1.6 billion, sold in Florida in August of last year.
