Memphis is known as the “Home of the Blues” for more than just music.
Studies have revealed that Memphis is considered the most dangerous city in the US to live in, not just in terms of crime but also when considering risks like car accidents, financial safety, and natural disasters.
According to the August findings from the Major Cities Chiefs Association Violent Crime Survey, Memphis had 129 homicides in the first six months of 2024, the highest among all cities in the nation.
Despite the high number of homicides, the study found that homicides in Memphis actually decreased from the previous year, with 156 in the first six months of 2023.
However, Memphis ranks low in several other key factors that contribute to overall safety, according to WalletHub’s survey.
WalletHub’s survey of 182 cities ranked Memphis at the bottom due to poor scores in categories such as residents’ financial safety, home and community safety, and risk of natural disaster.
The survey found that Memphis ranked second-to-last in residents’ financial safety, particularly having the lowest percentage of households with emergency savings.
It also ranked third-to-last in terms of home and community safety, with a high homicide rate and being among the bottom 10 cities in terms of assault per capita.
