Erik and Lyle Menendez are seeking to have their convictions reconsidered for the 1989 murders of their parents in Beverly Hills. The defense team, led by attorney Mark Geragos, will ask the judge to resentence the brothers on a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter based on new evidence. This could potentially lead to their release from prison. The Menendez brothers are expected to attend the hearing virtually from their prison in San Diego. The defense has presented new evidence supporting claims of sexual abuse by their father, including a letter written by Erik Menendez and allegations from a former member of Menudo. The Los Angeles County District Attorney has requested a resentencing, which could make the brothers eligible for parole as youthful offenders. Interest in the case has grown following a Netflix documentary. The defense team has submitted a clemency request to Governor Gavin Newsom, which is supported by the District Attorney. Newsom will wait for the incoming District Attorney to review the case before making a decision on clemency. A second hearing is scheduled for December. During the trials, the brothers claimed self-defense due to alleged abuse by their father.
