U.S. Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.) has requested records from MPD Chief Pamela Smith related to a ‘false narrative’ surrounding a Twitter claim that former President Donald Trump demanded to be taken from his Jan. 6 speech at the Ellipse to the U.S. Capitol. The request was made by the Committee on House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight in a letter dated May 29. The Subcommittee’s chairman, Rep. Loudermilk, stated that the request became necessary due to the failure of the now-defunct Jan. 6 Select Committee to properly archive documents and digital data related to its investigation.
The letter highlighted the need to understand investigative findings and mentioned that the Subcommittee may need to repeat much of the work of the Select Committee. Rep. Loudermilk also referred to a letter sent by former Select Committee chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) to MPD in July 2022, seeking information about the alleged incident involving President Trump demanding to be taken to the Capitol on Jan. 6.
The Subcommittee’s investigation revealed that there is no evidence to support the Select Committee’s narrative, and Rep. Loudermilk emphasized that evidence published by the Subcommittee contradicted the false narrative. The claim that President Trump lunged at the steering wheel of a presidential limousine was debunked in a report issued by the Subcommittee in March 2023.
The report revealed that the Secret Service agent who drove President Trump’s SUV on Jan. 6 testified that President Trump never attempted to take control of the vehicle or demanded to go to the Capitol. Additionally, former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Anthony Ornato refuted the claims made by Cassidy Hutchinson, a former aide to Mark Meadows.
Rep. Loudermilk informed Chief Smith that his Subcommittee does not have a record of any responses MPD may have provided to the Jan. 6 Select Committee. He also requested MPD to identify all officers who were involved in or positioned along the route for the former president on Jan. 6 and to provide any transcripts or records originally provided to the Select Committee.
