Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum recently responded to President-elect Trump’s renewed tariff threats by stating that migrant caravans are no longer heading to the United States. In a letter sent to Trump, Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico’s efforts to prevent the arrival of migrant caravans at the border and to combat drug trafficking, specifically mentioning fentanyl. She highlighted the decrease in encounters at the Mexico-United States border and the use of the CBP One app by many individuals. Sheinbaum stressed the importance of working together to address the root causes that lead families to leave their homes and proposed a new labor mobility model for the benefit of both countries.
According to data from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Border Patrol made 1.53 million arrests of illegal immigrants in the fiscal year ending Sept. 30. The Biden administration has been advocating for expanded pathways for migrants to enter the country to reduce illegal crossings, with over 44,600 people entering through the CBP One app in September alone.
Despite these efforts, concerns have been raised about the CBP One app potentially granting asylum too easily to illegal immigrants. Trump’s campaign and surrogates criticized the app, claiming that it facilitates the granting of legal status to migrants. Trump himself raised similar concerns about the app and its misuse by cartel leaders.
As of now, there has been no response from the Trump transition team to Sheinbaum’s letter. The letter was prompted by Trump’s social media posts threatening tariffs on Mexico if illegal immigration is not addressed. Trump also mentioned imposing tariffs on Canada and China if certain conditions are not met, emphasizing the need for action on drug trafficking and illegal immigration.
It remains to be seen how these developments will unfold, but it is clear that the issue of illegal immigration and drug trafficking continues to be a point of contention between the United States and its neighboring countries.
