Is this the beginning of the end for Canada Post?
I’m not the first columnist to suggest this. Canada Post, founded in 1867 as Royal Mail Canada, has faced debates over its future for years. It has almost ceased operations on several occasions.
However, as Sir John Templeton said, “This time is different.”
Aside from the impact of COVID-19, which was beyond Canada Post’s control, the issues of competition and declining mail volume have persisted. If these challenges continue in 2024, the situation will only worsen.
If Canada Post were to privatize, it could lead to competitive pricing, cost-saving measures, reevaluation of rural and suburban delivery methods, and a potential restructuring of labor relations for efficiency.
Spooner, a prominent 19th-century thinker, established the American Letter Mail Company as a competitor to the government-controlled postal service. His business offered lower rates and efficient services, showcasing the benefits of private enterprise in mail delivery.
