The Lee Point project in Darwin has faced criticism from its inception, particularly from local Indigenous leaders due to its ecological and cultural significance. Despite opposition from environmentalists and traditional landowners, a court has approved a controversial defence housing development at Lee Point. The development, which will include 800 homes, has been met with protests and legal challenges. Activists, including Environmental Justice Australia, have raised concerns about the impact on the area’s cultural heritage and endangered species like the Gouldian finch.
While the development has been temporarily halted to allow for further review, the Environment Minister has ultimately decided to allow the project to proceed. The minister cited the lack of evidence of significant Aboriginal sites within the development area as the reason for her decision. However, local campaigners, including the Larrakia Danggalaba custodians, remain opposed to the development and are exploring their legal options to continue their fight.
