A Mississippi mother was taken into custody this week after her 10-year-old daughter overdosed on prescription drugs as part of a suicide pact they had made.
Brittney Leigh Hensley’s bail was set at $500,000 following her arrest in Alabama, as reported by the Ocean Springs Weekly Record.
Authorities revealed that the mother and daughter made the pact on July 6 while staying at a Studio 6 Motel in Ocean Springs.
Police were alerted to the hotel just before 6:30 p.m. in response to reports of an overdose.
Hensley’s daughter had ingested a significant number of pills before reconsidering her decision to end her own life, law enforcement stated.
The pills were reportedly prescribed to Hensley.
The young girl was found unconscious when the authorities arrived. Her name has not been disclosed by the police.
Hensley fled Mississippi shortly after her daughter was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Upon realizing that she had family in Huntsville, Alabama, detectives traced Hensley to that location, where she was apprehended on Oct. 14.
She was extradited back to Mississippi a few days ago. Hensley was charged with felony child abuse causing serious bodily harm.
According to the Weekly Record, Hensley informed the police that she had also taken pills on July 6, but did not specify the quantity or duration of ingestion.
Medical professionals anticipate that Hensley’s daughter will fully recover from the overdose.
