Last autumn, I published three articles in the Epoch Times that shed light on Governor Gavin Newsom’s controversial trip to communist China. These articles, titled “Chinese State-Owned Media Uses Gov. Newsom in Massive Propaganda Blast,” “Gov. Newsom Embarrasses California in Meeting Dictator Xi in China,” and “Newsom Junket Appeases Communist China,” exposed the governor’s connections with the Beijing regime.
A new book by investigative journalist Peter Schweizer, titled “Blood Money: Why the Powerful Turn a Blind Eye While China Kills Americans,” delves deeper into Newsom’s propaganda trip and his ties to China. According to Schweizer, the trip was organized by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, an affiliate of Chinese intelligence. This meant that Newsom did not have the protection of U.S. intelligence agencies during his visit.
During his visit, Newsom received special treatment from Beijing, including a meeting with President Xi in the Great Hall of the People. This meeting, where Newsom sat side-by-side with Xi, was seen as a gesture of respect towards the governor. However, it also raised concerns about China’s long-term investment in Newsom and his relationship with the Chinese regime.
Newsom’s visit to China was criticized for downplaying important issues, such as the fentanyl crisis that is affecting communities in the U.S. Newsom’s office claimed that he brought up the issue of fentanyl with Xi, but critics argue that he failed to address China’s central role in the crisis. Schweizer highlights the political and financial motivations behind Newsom’s reluctance to confront China on this issue.
Overall, Newsom’s trip to China raised questions about his relationship with the Beijing regime and his handling of important issues such as the fentanyl crisis. The book “Blood Money” sheds light on these concerns and calls for a closer examination of Newsom’s ties to China. In April 2020, Governor Newsom signed a controversial mask contract with Chinese manufacturer BYD, costing $495 million upfront and a projected total of $990 million. This decision was heavily criticized by many, including Mr. Moorlach who questioned the wisdom of the deal. BYD, a company with no experience in producing medical gear, had a history of securing no-bid contracts and inflated prices. When the masks arrived, they were rejected by federal inspectors for being subpar and unsafe. Despite these concerns, Newsom continued to support BYD, even praising their products during a visit to China in 2023.
My articles, “Newsom Junket Appeases Communist China” and “Gov. Newsom Embarrasses California in Meeting Dictator Xi in China,” provide more in-depth analysis of Newsom’s ties to China and the BYD contract. From his days as mayor of San Francisco, Newsom has had close connections with Chinese entities, including ChinaSF, which has been criticized for benefiting Chinese companies with ties to organized crime.
Peter Schweizer’s book sheds light on Newsom’s relationship with China and raises important questions about his suitability for higher office. It is essential reading for all Americans, especially those considering supporting Newsom for a presidential run.
