Former Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has been granted a board position with Australia Post, receiving approval for her next move.
The federal opposition criticized the appointment, accusing the Commonwealth of appointing “one of its Labor mates.”
Palaszczuk will serve as a non-executive director on the Australia Post board, marking one of her first roles since leaving office in December as Australia’s longest-serving female premier.
The three-year position comes with an annual salary of $107,000 (US$70,980), replacing Tony Nutt, the former Liberal Party federal director.
In addition to her new role, Palaszczuk recently announced her involvement as an international ambassador for the Smart Energy Council, leading a delegation to China in June.
Federal Finance Minister Katy Gallagher praised Palaszczuk’s appointment, citing her experience and ability to aid Australia Post in modernizing and meeting consumer needs.
However, opposition communications spokesman David Coleman criticized the appointment, calling it “rank hypocrisy” and expressing concern about Palaszczuk’s record in public administration.
Palaszczuk’s resignation in late 2023 marked the end of her three-term tenure as Queensland’s premier, making her the first Australian female premier to achieve this milestone.
Federal Communications Minister Michelle Rowland highlighted Palaszczuk’s experience in serving regional and rural communities, emphasizing her contribution to Australia Post’s diverse and strong board.
Palaszczuk is also reportedly working on a book about her political journey, promising “explosive insights” with the support of celebrity agent Max Markson.
