New Screening Tool Predicts Vitamin D Deficiency
A research team led by Professor Akiko Kuwabara at Osaka Metropolitan University’s Graduate School of Human Life and Ecology conducted a survey involving 583 Japanese women aged 18 to 40.
The survey collected detailed data on participants’ age, location, medical history, sun exposure habits, and supplement use. Dietary assessments were done using a self-administered questionnaire.
The team calculated the average and cumulative ultraviolet (UV) exposure for the 30 days prior to blood sample collection. This data led to the development of a non-invasive, cost-effective risk assessment tool named ViDDPreS (Vitamin D Deficiency Predicting Scoring).
In Japan, excessive sunscreen use and a cultural preference for avoiding tanned skin have significantly reduced sun exposure, leading to insufficient vitamin D production.
Importance of Supplementation
Addressing the risks associated with vitamin D deficiency caused by sun avoidance is crucial. Kuwabara emphasized the beneficial effects of vitamin D supplementation for individuals deficient in this essential nutrient.
Factors Contributing to Deficiency Risk
Dr. Kecia Gaither, a board-certified physician specializing in obstetrics, gynecology, and maternal-fetal medicine, highlighted the importance of assessing vitamin D levels in pregnant patients to address deficiencies promptly.
“Vitamin D supplementation is cost-effective, with daily doses typically ranging from 1000-2000 IU depending on the level of deficiency,” Gaither explained.
