This move comes as North Korea strengthens ties with Russia, indicating a shared interest in pushing back against the West. Kim’s growing impatience with China’s long-term strategy to infiltrate and subvert the West may be driving this decision. Additionally, recent developments, such as North Korean soldiers fighting alongside Russian troops in Ukraine, highlight the deepening relationship between Pyongyang and Moscow. This new alignment could potentially reshape regional alliances in East Asia, experts say. Su pointed out that although China and North Korea seemed to be in conflict during the Six-Party Talks, it was mainly a tactical maneuver. Their strategic cooperation, especially in nuclear matters, was significant.
However, Beijing’s approach to denuclearization has changed over time. In May, China, Japan, and South Korea issued a joint declaration supporting regional denuclearization efforts. While this was well-received globally, it led to North Korea’s defiance. Pyongyang responded by attempting to launch a military reconnaissance satellite, signaling its displeasure.
Sun explained that North Korea’s symbolic actions are a warning to China, demanding a clearer stance on denuclearization that aligns with its interests.
Additionally, North Korea has taken steps to limit Chinese influence domestically by expanding bans on Chinese media, confiscating devices with Chinese content, and increasing surveillance of Chinese residents. These actions reflect North Korea’s desire to maintain independence and ideological purity.
Su emphasized that Kim Jong Un’s aggressive behavior is aimed at consolidating power and managing internal factions. The tensions between the two countries stem from historical grievances, internal politics, and strategic considerations.
For China, maintaining influence over North Korea while avoiding excessive interference is crucial as any instability in North Korea could impact China’s security and economic interests.
Despite apparent strains, the alliance between North Korea and China is based on mutual interests. Su believes that their long-term alliance framework will remain unchanged, dismissing any notions of a breakup among North Korea, China, and Russia.
