License Plate Scam: Drivers Using Illegal Covers to Evade Fines
Drivers looking to avoid fines and penalties have found a new way to skirt the law with the use of devices that can cover or obscure license plate characters. These devices, known as “ghost plates,” are being promoted on social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and even Amazon, with prices ranging from $60 to $70 each.
By applying these sneaky stickers, films, and coverings to their license plates, drivers are able to evade speeding tickets, tolls, and congestion zone fees in cities like New York. While these products claim to be “absolutely legal” and promise to make license plate characters invisible to cameras while remaining visible to the naked eye, the legality of their use is questionable.
According to traffic-ticket attorney Martin Kron, if the intent is to defraud, using these products is illegal. New York State has amended its rules on ghost plates, making it illegal to sell or distribute materials designed to look like a lawful license plate but have not been legally issued by the NY DMV. Fines for using these illegal covers have been increased to $500, with repeat offenders facing vehicle registration suspension.
Despite efforts by law enforcement to crack down on fake plates, the issue persists. The NYPD has seized thousands of “ghost cars” and issued summonses for improper or covered plates. In response, Instagram and other platforms have been slow to remove posts selling these illegal devices, raising concerns about enforcement.
While the sale and use of these license plate covers may currently be difficult to enforce, legal experts warn that laws could change in the future. For now, drivers are advised to comply with the law and avoid using these illegal devices to evade fines and penalties.
