The individual who carried out a shooting at the emergency room of Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx two years ago, narrowly missing a woman holding a baby, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Keber Martinez, 25, received his sentence after pleading guilty to first-degree assault for the shooting incident that took place on January 25, 2022. The shooting resulted in the injury of one man and caused chaos among the hospital staff and patients.
“The defendant fired shots inside Jacobi’s emergency room, injuring one man and showing complete disregard for the safety of patients and staff, with one bullet narrowly missing a woman holding a baby,” stated Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark.
“The defendant’s violent actions have now been answered with a substantial prison sentence,” added Clark.
Surveillance footage captured Martinez wearing a dark hoodie at a desk in the emergency waiting area, where he pulled out a gun and began shooting at another man.
Martinez fired multiple shots at the victim, a 35-year-old man who was struck in the left arm.
Following the shooting, individuals inside the waiting area had to seek shelter under chairs and furniture until Martinez fled the scene, leaving a trail of blood leading to the victim.
The hospital was temporarily closed after the incident, and the injured man underwent surgery for treatment.
Martinez was apprehended in Harlem about 12 hours later, with his hospital check-in information playing a role in his capture as he had complained of asthma issues.
He was arrested after his sister contacted 911 to report his erratic behavior, hearing voices, and possession of a firearm, as reported by NBC New York.
It is believed that Martinez and the victim were acquainted with each other.
In addition to serving 12 years in prison, Martinez will also be subject to five years of post-release supervision.
