Thousands of Migrant Criminals Roaming New York City Streets
The head of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s NYC field office, Kenneth Genalo, told The Post that there are thousands of migrant criminals roaming the streets of Gotham.
Genalo expressed his frustration with the current situation, stating, “In New York City, it would take a lifetime to clear the city of the criminals that we have.” He emphasized the need for additional resources to address the issue.
As the regional director of the NYC-area office overseeing nearly 400 staff members, Genalo highlighted the challenges of focusing resources on the most egregious violators. He acknowledged that the number of criminals is in the thousands.
According to data from ICE, out of nearly 7.8 million illegal immigrants in the US, 662,586 are convicted felons or have criminal charges pending. More than 223,000 migrants have entered New York City since the immigration crisis began in 2022.
Genalo expressed his frustration with New York’s sanctuary laws, which prevent migrant criminals from being rounded up and deported. He emphasized the need for policy changes to address the issue.
Under Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration, immigration-law enforcement in NYC suffered due to policies preventing cooperation with federal immigration officials. The consequences of these policies have been evident in cases like the murder of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley by an illegal migrant who was set free.
Mayor Eric Adams has called for loosening sanctuary rules to allow for the cooperation with ICE in cases involving serious crimes. However, political support on the City Council is needed to make changes to the existing laws.
Genalo emphasized the importance of cooperation between local and federal authorities in addressing the issue of migrant criminals in New York City. He expressed support for Mayor Adams’ efforts to address the challenges posed by sanctuary policies.
