The newly appointed police commissioner, Jessica Tisch, brings a wealth of experience to her new role. Prior to this position, she served as the NYPD deputy commissioner for technology and led the city’s Sanitation Department. At the swearing-in ceremony on Nov. 25, Mayor Adams praised Tisch’s dedication and leadership abilities.
With a background as an anti-terrorism analyst and experience in various roles within NYC government, including as the commissioner of the Department of Sanitation, Tisch is well-equipped to lead the police department. During her time at the Department of Sanitation, Tisch spearheaded initiatives such as the War on Rats and Trash Revolution, which significantly decreased the city’s rat population by implementing mandatory trash bins.
Mayor Adams commended Tisch for her managerial skills and emphasized her ability to lead effectively. Despite her lack of direct experience in law enforcement, Adams expressed confidence in Tisch’s capabilities, stating that “a good manager can manage anywhere.”
Under Tisch’s leadership, the city successfully containerized a large portion of its trash and reduced the number of reported rat sightings. She has also been instrumental in implementing new technologies within the police department, such as bodycams and shot-detection systems.
Tisch’s appointment comes in the wake of former Police Commissioner Edward Caban’s resignation due to a federal investigation. Adams expressed his support for Tisch and her commitment to serving the people of New York City. As the second female police commissioner in NYC’s history, Tisch is poised to continue implementing innovative solutions to enhance public safety.
