Harris’s presidential bid received endorsements from former President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and President Joe Biden at the Democratic National Convention on Aug. 20, marking a new chapter after three families dominated Democratic presidential races for 35 years. Obama praised Harris as a tough yet compassionate leader with a successful track record, highlighting her work as a district attorney and attorney general. The convention also marked the end of an era where the Clintons, Obamas, and Bidens had significant influence in Democratic politics. Obama’s endorsement of Harris signaled a shift in leadership and a focus on a new direction for the party. Five days later, Clinton conceded and endorsed Obama. Obama then selected Biden as his running mate and appointed Clinton as Secretary of State. Biden, who was seen as a potential candidate for the presidency in 2016, decided not to run due to the recent passing of his son Beau. In 2020, Biden was elected president and chose Harris as his running mate. Harris, a first-term senator and a close friend of the Obamas, had been gaining prominence in national politics. Some compare Harris to Obama, while others highlight her own strengths as a candidate. According to Sen. Richard Blumenthal, Harris has the potential to inspire the nation with her policies and persona. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore believes that Harris is running her own race based on her merits. Harris was not present at the convention on Tuesday night as she held a campaign rally in Milwaukee.
