On October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorists launched a brutal attack on southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians. This attack sparked a continuing conflict that raises important questions about self-defense and the legitimacy of military targets. It also highlighted the stark contrast between good and evil, innocent civilians and terrorists—and sadly, some individuals around the world are siding with the wrong party.
The heinous acts of terrorism, including the murder of civilians and the abduction of hundreds, are unequivocally unjustifiable. Shockingly, there is no universally accepted definition of terrorism, as governments often keep the term vague to exempt their own actions and possibly target domestic political opponents.

Terrorism Defined as Targeting Civilians
According to a U.N. report, terrorism is characterized by actions intended to cause harm to civilians or non-combatants with the goal of instilling fear or influencing governmental decisions. Distinguishing terrorism from legitimate military actions is crucial—terrorism deliberately targets innocent civilians.
While military actions may be justifiable based on certain circumstances, deliberately targeting civilians for harm is unequivocally terrorism and warrants swift justice.
October 7 Attack: Carnage Among Civilians
The October 7 attack involved thousands of rockets launched from Gaza into Israel, followed by terrorists from Hamas and its allies crossing the border and inflicting mass casualties on civilians, including rape, torture, and murder.
The horrific assault resulted in the deaths of 1,200 individuals, predominantly civilians. Hostages were taken, with some being released, rescued, or tragically murdered while others remain in captivity, including four Americans.
Terrorists who target innocent civilians for violence and abduction deserve condemnation and must be held accountable for their atrocities.
Challenges of a Just Response
Responding to terrorists while minimizing civilian casualties presents a complex ethical dilemma. Terrorist organizations like Hamas often use civilians as shields, making it difficult to target militants without risking innocent lives.
While efforts to mitigate risks are essential, conflicts like the one involving Hezbollah have shown the challenges of distinguishing combatants from non-combatants and the tragic consequences that can result.
Terrorists Exploit Innocent Lives
Terrorists like Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar have shown a callous disregard for human life, viewing civilian casualties as necessary sacrifices to further their agenda. This calculated evil places individuals in a moral quandary.
Embracing terrorists as freedom fighters or supporting their actions only perpetuates violence and undermines the principles of justice and human rights. Those who condone terrorism reveal their true intentions and should be closely monitored.
Antisemitism and support for terrorist acts must be unequivocally condemned, and individuals engaging in terrorism should be apprehended and prosecuted to prevent future atrocities.
