Authorities have identified the inmate accused of attacking and killing an Ohio veteran corrections officer on Christmas Day.
The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC) confirmed the tragic death of Officer Andrew Lansing following an inmate assault at the prison in Chillicothe.
The incident occurred around 7:15 am, and no additional information about the assault has been released by the department.
The inmate responsible for the attack has been identified as 27-year-old Rashawn Cannon, serving time for felonious assault and weapon under disability charges from September 2023, with an expected release date of Aug. 5, 2030, according to the ODRC website.
Cannon has been transferred to the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility.
Annette Chambers-Smith, Director of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, issued a statement regarding the assault, describing it as a difficult loss.
âIt is with great sadness that I confirm the tragic death of Correction Officer Andrew Lansing following an inmate assault that occurred at Ross Correctional Institution this morning,â Chambers-Smith said.
Chambers-Smith highlighted Officer Lansing’s dedicated service and the impact of his untimely death on his family, colleagues, and the entire agency.
âOfficer Lansing was loved by his colleagues and known to be a great support for his fellow RCI staff. We ask that you keep Officer Lansingâs family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers at this devastating and tragic time,â the statement continued.
Rep. Mark Johnson, R-Ohio, expressed condolences and described Officer Lansing as one of the finest corrections officers.
âWhile many among us were celebrating our Christmas holiday, a tragedy struck the Ross Correctional Facility. Iâm saddened and troubled to say one of the finest correction officers lost his life today in a struggle with an incarcerated inmate,â the statement read.
âThe Ohio Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation into the killing. Please remember the officerâs family in your prayers as they cope with his loss on Christmas Day.â
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine ordered flags to be lowered in honor of Officer Lansing until sunset on the day of his funeral.
Chambers-Smith mentioned that the Ross Correctional Institution is currently under restricted movement, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation.
