Ontario Premier Doug Ford has announced plans to increase speed limits to 110 kilometres per hour on 400-series highways in an effort to alleviate congestion and reduce travel times. He has directed Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria to implement this change where it is deemed safe.
Speaking at a press conference in East York, Premier Ford emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing gridlock and enabling people to spend more time with their families by minimizing commute times.
Ford acknowledged that many drivers already exceed the current speed limits on major highways and expressed a desire to improve traffic flow, particularly during rush hour on Highway 401.
Minister Sarkaria disclosed that engineers are evaluating sections of the 400 highways to determine where higher speed limits can be safely implemented.
Among the highways with raised speed limits are sections of Highway 401, Highway 403, Highway 406, Highway 416, and Highway 69, spanning various stretches across the province.
Minister Sarkaria emphasized that penalties for stunt driving remain in effect at 150 kilometres per hour, even on highways with higher speed limits. Stunt driving penalties will apply at 40 kilometres per hour over the posted limit on these sections.
