During their first debate, the Republican incumbent accused her Democratic rival of being soft on crime, while the challenger criticized the congresswoman for her support of Trump. The debate covered various topics including abortion, immigration, and crime, showcasing the differences between the candidates in Oregon’s 5th Congressional District. This district is considered a tossup and could have a significant impact on the balance of power in the U.S. House. The candidates, Lori Chavez-DeRemer and Janelle Bynum, presented contrasting views on key issues, making it a highly competitive race.
In the lead-up to the upcoming election, prominent politicians have been actively campaigning in the district for both candidates, underscoring the significance of the race.
Back in August, House Speaker Mike Johnson made a visit to Portland to show his support for Chavez-DeRemer, who has endorsed his bid for speaker in 2023.
During a visit to the state on Oct. 2, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries commended Bynum’s track record as a state legislator.
At the 10th Annual Reagan Dinner in Portland on Sept. 28, Chavez-DeRemer shared the stage with Republican U.S. Rep. Ryan Zinke of Montana and former All-American swimmer Riley Marie Gaines, who has been vocal about her opposition to transgender women participating in women’s sports.
The candidates are scheduled to participate in debates on Oct. 10 and 15.
