Located just west of Modesto, Dos Rios State Park is a 1,600-acre park that is the largest floodplain restoration project in the state of California. The park is set to open in June.
On Earth Day, April 22, California officials came together to commemorate the establishment of Dos Rios State Park, which is the first new park in the state in ten years.
Governor Gavin Newsom, along with local and state officials, gathered at the park ahead of its anticipated opening on June 12.
The park, named “Dos Rios” which means “Two Rivers” in Spanish, is situated at the convergence of the Tuolumne and San Joaquin rivers, approximately 8 miles west of Modesto in Central California.
This marks the first new state park since the dedication of the Eastern Kern County Onyx Ranch State Vehicular Recreation Area in 2014.
Speaking about the park, Governor Newsom’s wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, emphasized the importance of Earth Day as a reminder of the shared responsibility for the planet’s health and future.
Dos Rios State Park is a collaborative effort that cost $40 million, funded by 11 public and private sources. The project was undertaken in partnership with River Partners, a nonprofit organization dedicated to acquiring, restoring, and protecting areas along rivers and streams.
The restoration efforts at the park have already had a positive impact on wildlife, leading to the delisting of the Aleutian Cackling Goose, a previously endangered migrating species.
The establishment of Dos Rios State Park exemplifies California’s commitment to biodiversity conservation and combating climate change, as outlined in Governor Newsom’s conservation report of 2022.
As part of the state’s long-term strategy, Dos Rios State Park contributes to the goal of setting aside half of California’s lands for conservation. The park will offer recreational activities such as hiking, picnicking, swimming, fishing, boating, and more.
California State Parks Director Armando Quintero envisions Dos Rios as a retreat into nature, showcasing the lush landscapes of the Central Valley and providing a local escape adjacent to rivers and a wildlife refuge.
With its diverse recreational opportunities and focus on conservation, Dos Rios State Park is poised to become a cherished destination for residents and visitors alike.
