A pair of 16-year-olds were apprehended for bringing a firearm into a Brooklyn school on Thursday, amidst a surge in student violence across New York City.
The boy and girl were caught exchanging the weapon while seated in a classroom at Metropolitan Diploma Plus High School on 985 Rockaway Avenue in Brownsville around 12:45 p.m., as per sources and authorities.
Law enforcement stated that the boy removed the gun from a backpack and handed it to the girl.
Sources mentioned that law enforcement officers rushed to the school following a tip about a student carrying a gun in a backpack.
The school was placed on lockdown as authorities conducted a search for the weapon, according to sources.
Both teenagers were taken into custody at the school, which lacks a metal detector, authorities stated.
This alarming incident is part of an unsettling pattern of youth violence involving firearms in city schools.
Just the day before, two 17-year-olds were shot outside Isaac Bildersee Junior High School in Canarsie around 3:15 p.m., as reported by the police.
The day prior, a 15-year-old student was shot in the leg outside his Canarsie high school, located less than a mile from where the shooting occurred on Wednesday.
Recently, a 17-year-old was shot near his Staten Island High School – less than half an hour after two teenagers were separately apprehended with firearms inside a Flushing high school.
