In Norco, California, a tragic series of crashes on a Southern California interstate over the weekend resulted in the death of a passenger in a car after a horse smashed through the windshield, authorities reported.
The chain of events began around 2 a.m. on Sunday when a Toyota Tacoma towing a horse trailer veered off the road and collided with a guardrail on northbound Interstate 15 near Norco, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The impact caused the trailer to split open, sending the horse onto the freeway. Subsequently, a semitractor-trailer crashed into the horse trailer.
The horse managed to reach the median but then attempted to cross the interstate, leading to a collision with a black Honda Accord, as described by highway patrol Officer Javier Navarro to the Southern California News Group.
Following that, a gray Honda Accord struck the horse, propelling it through the car’s windshield. Tragically, the passenger, a 25-year-old man in the front seat, was fatally injured. The horse also did not survive the incident.
The driver of the Honda, a 27-year-old man, sustained minor injuries, as reported by the news group.
As of Monday, no arrests have been made, Navarro stated. The cause of the initial collision involving the Toyota towing the horse trailer is currently under investigation.
