In 2024, more than 100 individuals died as a result of torture and abuse. This tragic reality highlights the ongoing persecution faced by Falun Gong practitioners in China. Despite the practice being outlawed over 25 years ago, thousands of adherents continue to be arrested, imprisoned, and tortured for their beliefs.
According to Minghui.org, a U.S.-based website documenting the persecution of Falun Gong, nearly 5,000 adherents were detained and tortured by the Chinese regime in the first ten months of the year. Shockingly, almost a thousand were jailed, and 117 lost their lives due to mistreatment.
Bitter Winter, a human rights publication based in Italy, expressed concerns about the mistreatment of Falun Gong practitioners in Chinese prisons. The organization reported on the harsh sentencing of individuals like Sun Wentian and Guo Changsuo, who received lengthy jail terms merely for possessing Falun Gong literature.
The persecution of Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, stems from the regime’s fear of its moral teachings and growing popularity. Since 1999, when the Chinese Communist Party launched a campaign to eradicate the practice, countless individuals like Ma Zufu, Zhao Ying, and Fan Wenfang have endured unimaginable suffering for their beliefs.
Reports of torture, arbitrary detention, and imprisonment paint a grim picture of the atrocities faced by Falun Gong practitioners in China. Despite this, the world must not turn a blind eye to the ongoing human rights violations against these individuals.
Fan endured horrific torture, including being bound to a bed with ropes in a method known as “death bed,” given intravenous drips, and denied access to the restroom. Despite being tortured nearly to death, she was eventually sent home.
In September 2002, Fan was taken to Funan Detention Center where she suffered forced feedings and other abuses that left her malnourished, hypoglycemic, and emaciated. Chinese authorities released her when her life was in danger. However, she was quickly taken to Ying Shang Detention Center where she endured more torture for over a month before returning home barely alive.
After her return in May 2003, Fan was detained at Linquan Detention Center for over six months where she experienced severe physical and psychological torture, including having her hair torn out, ears and nose injured, lips, mouth, and tongue left bloody, and teeth pulled. She fainted from the pain at times.
Fan’s imprisonment continued over the years with multiple stints at Anhui Province Women’s Prison, totaling 17 years. She was left bedridden and paralyzed for years due to relentless torture but regained some health through her Falun Gong practice upon returning home.
Despite being arrested again in 2013 and sentenced to five more years for possessing Falun Gong materials, Fan faced further torture and abuse. Her latest imprisonment began in July 2022, resulting in a five-year sentence at Anhui Province Women’s Prison where her suffering intensified.
Fan’s refusal to denounce her faith led to beatings, denial of necessities, and forced uncomfortable positions for extended periods. The CCP authorities used other inmates to torture Falun Gong practitioners in exchange for sentence reductions. Fan is now unable to walk, toothless, and reliant on liquid food for survival.
Her health continues to deteriorate as she remains imprisoned. The persecution of Fan in Anhui Province Women’s Prison is just one example of the brutal treatment faced by Falun Gong practitioners.
Former Chinese human rights lawyer Wu Shaoping condemned the CCP for its persecution of Fan, stating that faith is protected in the constitution. He praised Falun Gong for teaching kindness and good deeds, calling them a “beacon of integrity” in China. Despite societal challenges, Falun Gong practitioners continue to uphold their faith and spread positivity. Please rewrite the following sentence for me.
