During a recent panel in Ottawa, I had the opportunity to moderate discussions with Canada’s independent publishers. As traditional news outlets struggle, it is clear that the future of the news industry lies with these independent voices.
Many independent publishers have been successful in delivering unbiased and balanced news that resonates with audiences. However, the implementation of the Online News Act by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has had detrimental effects on the industry.
One publisher shared that their company experienced a 45% drop in audience overnight due to Meta banning news links on Facebook and Instagram in Canada. This led to a halt in expansion plans and hiring.
Trudeau has blamed Meta for this situation, emphasizing the importance of supporting journalism against internet giants. However, the reality is that emergency information is readily available on social media platforms, rendering news links less critical in such situations.
While Meta has seen an increase in usage and share price, news companies have suffered significant losses. B.C. Premier David Eby took a different approach, focusing on collaboration with social media platforms to ensure public safety.
Trudeau’s Online News Act has caused financial strain on news companies, with Google and Meta reducing funding and exposure. By amending the act to prioritize the interests of the news industry, Trudeau can positively impact its future.
It is essential for Trudeau to acknowledge the impact of his actions on the news industry and demonstrate humility in finding solutions. A good leader would prioritize the well-being of the industry over personal ambitions.
