When the Liberal government announced a $1 billion national school food program, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre criticized the prime minister for unveiling the plan on the same day the federal carbon tax was increased.
“After eight years of promising to assist the middle class, the prime minister now admits that one in four children do not have enough food. I find it ironic that he is introducing a federal food bureaucracy in Ottawa on the same day he raises taxes on food,” Mr. Poilievre said during a press conference in Nanaimo, B.C., on April 1.
During the 2021 election campaign, Mr. Trudeau pledged to launch such a program, and the federal NDP, which has a supply and confidence agreement with the Liberals until 2025, urged the party to fulfill that promise before the April 16 federal budget.
The Liberals argue that through the Canada Carbon Rebate, the federal government provides more money back to eight out of 10 Canadians than they pay through the carbon tax. Mr. Trudeau also defends the carbon tax as an effective measure to combat climate change.
Poilievre Criticizes Impact of Carbon Tax on Families
On April 1, Canadians across the country protested against the federal carbon tax hike, contending that it is financially burdensome amid escalating living costs.
Mr. Poilievre, whose party consistently calls for the removal of the carbon tax, informed reporters that the policy is driving up food prices. “Taxing the farmer who produces the food and the trucker who transports it is a burden on the single mother who cannot afford to purchase food,” he stated.
The Conservative leader emphasized that the high number of school children lacking adequate food was a “significant failure” on the part of the prime minister. “This comes after eight years of pledges to assist the middle class,” he remarked.
When asked if he would support the Liberals’ national school food program, Mr. Poilievre did not provide a direct answer, instead advocating for his “common sense plan” to eliminate the carbon tax and reduce food costs.
