Authorities in Blackfoot, Idaho, are conducting an investigation following the discovery of a deceased baby girl in a Safe Haven Baby Box at Grove Creek Medical Center. The incident occurred on October 13, prompting a swift response from hospital staff who found the infant had tragically passed away before being placed inside the box.
Monica Kelsey, the founder of Safe Haven Baby Boxes, expressed deep sadness over the situation, emphasizing that anonymity is only permitted when an infant is surrendered unharmed. Idaho law specifically states that only healthy and unharmed infants can be surrendered through this program.
The organization and hospital staff are collaborating with law enforcement on the case. The baby was found wrapped in a blanket with the placenta still attached, adding to the heartbreaking nature of the discovery.
Grove Creek Medical Center staff members are commended for their efforts in handling this heartbreaking situation with compassion and professionalism.
Kelsey, who herself was abandoned as a newborn in 1973, established Safe Haven Baby Boxes in Indiana in 2016. These specially designed boxes, located at fire departments and hospitals, offer a safe and anonymous method for individuals to surrender a newborn.
The medical-grade boxes are installed in the exterior walls of buildings, with an automatic locking system when a baby is placed inside. A medical staff member then secures the infant from inside the building.
Safe Haven Baby Boxes are available in multiple states, with 52 infants safely surrendered at these locations since 2017. Kelsey vows to continue educating the public about the program and its purpose.
