According to Geoscience Australia, over 2,500 individuals experienced the earthquake.
A seismic event measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale has impacted the Muswellbrook area of New South Wales (NSW) in the Upper Hunter Valley region, approximately 250 kilometers north of Sydney.
Local power outages have been reported, and the local shire has indicated that certain parts of the region may be without water.
Geoscience Australia’s report confirmed that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers underground.
Initially reported as a 5 on the Richter scale, the earthquake was later downgraded to 4.7.
The tremors were felt not only in the Hunter region but also in outer Sydney suburbs such as Marsden Park and the Northern Beaches.
The NSW Rural Fire Service has confirmed no injuries but has urged the public to contact emergency services if needed.
“Parts of Muswellbrook may be without water, including Woodland Ridge and potentially areas of Eastbrook Links. Council is assessing our essential services and infrastructure,” the council announced.
The NSW SES has received multiple calls at the state operations center following the earthquake.
Footage from a local Mitre 10 hardware store in Muswellbrook shows products knocked off shelves due to the earthquake.
One resident from the Hunter region mentioned feeling the earthquake’s effects even in Newcastle, located 140 kilometers away.
