A Catholic, pro-life community health clinic has taken legal action against California Attorney General Rob Bonta for attempting to shut down abortion pill reversal services.
The organization is asking the court to affirm the legality of abortion pill reversal as well as seeking damages and an injunction against Bonta.
Abortion pill reversal is a procedure some pregnant women choose when they have a change of heart after taking the first abortion pill. Advocates claim that administering hormones within 24 hours can save the unborn child. However, critics argue that the procedure is unproven and potentially unsafe.
While medication abortions are legal in 36 states and the District of Columbia, Culture of Life operates three licensed community health clinics in San Diego County that offer a range of services, including abortion pill reversal treatment.
The organization alleges that Bonta’s actions violate the First Amendment by targeting protected speech aimed at helping pregnant women who have taken abortion medication.
In a separate lawsuit filed in September 2023, Bonta sued Heartbeat International and RealOptions Obria for allegedly making false claims about abortion pill reversal. Bonta stated that the procedure is experimental, lacks scientific evidence, and may pose risks to patients.
Despite these legal challenges, Culture of Life’s legal complaint argues that Bonta’s actions are unconstitutional and infringe on Californians’ rights.
Legal counsel from the Thomas More Society, a public interest law firm, contends that Bonta’s efforts to restrict information about abortion pill reversal deny women the opportunity to make informed decisions about their reproductive health.
Peter Breen, the society’s executive vice president, emphasized the importance of allowing women to have a second chance to choose life through abortion pill reversal.
