Things became more tumultuous at a rally after-party hosted at a Broadway restaurant.
Protesters rallying against the conflict in Gaza disrupted a Democratic rally and its subsequent after-party in New York City on August 14. The city’s federal, state, and municipal leaders had gathered to express their support for Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
The protesters mainly gathered behind barricades and made noise across from the event, which was heavily guarded by police.
Later in the day, the situation escalated at an after-party for the Democratic rally held at a Broadway restaurant.
Some individuals were seen drumming, blowing horns, and whistling. Many of the protesters had their faces covered with keffiyehs in the traditional black-and-white pattern associated with Palestinians.
At a certain point, a group of protesters entered the restaurant where the after-party was being held and began confronting the customers inside, shouting phrases like “You are liars” and “You set Palestine on fire.”
One protester directed his message at the customers, stating, “American citizen money goes to Israel and funds this genocide. We all have a responsibility to speak out, don’t turn a blind eye, children are dying.”
Outside the establishment, clashes occurred between some protesters and the police, with video footage capturing law enforcement officers arresting multiple individuals.
At times, the protesters seemed to overpower the police officers, who repeatedly urged them to “stay back.”
Large plumes of smoke were also visible amidst the crowd of demonstrators, although the source of the smoke was not entirely clear.
It is uncertain whether there were any injuries during the protests.
The Epoch Times has reached out to the New York City Police Department (NYPD) for a statement.
Harris is scheduled to deliver a speech at the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where she and Walz will be officially endorsed as the party’s nominees for president and vice president.
