During President Joe Biden’s fundraiser in New York with former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, pro-Palestinian protesters repeatedly interrupted the event, highlighting a significant electoral challenge for Biden. Despite the interruptions, the fundraiser raised $26 million and featured performances by Lizzo and emceed by Mindy Kaling. The former presidents expressed support for Biden’s re-election, emphasizing his commitment to Palestinian self-determination and a two-state solution. Biden called for an end to civilian deaths in Gaza and highlighted support from Arab countries for recognizing Israel.
The event, which broke fundraising records, showcased Democratic party unity and a strong campaign war chest for Biden. The trio of Democratic ex-presidents emphasized the threat of a potential return to the White House by former President Donald Trump. However, the protests underscored Biden’s challenges in regaining support from young voters and handling the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Despite the disruptions, attendees and organizers viewed the protests as a part of democracy. Obama urged Democrats to focus on the positive aspects of Biden’s presidency, highlighting his efforts to address healthcare issues. Biden, responding to concerns about his age, emphasized his experience and wisdom compared to Trump’s outdated ideas.
The event drew thousands of supporters, with some waiting in line for over an hour to enter. The protests and tensions at the fundraiser reflect the broader challenges facing Biden as he navigates domestic and international issues in his bid for re-election. Stu Loeser, former press secretary for Mike Bloomberg, mentioned that unlike typical political fundraisers, young aides were not given free tickets to the event – every ticket was sold. New York State Democratic Party Chair Jay Jacobs also waited in line for a photo with the presidents, describing the event as a “who’s who.” Ticket prices for the event started at $225, with access to private receptions ranging from $250,000 to $500,000. A photo with the three presidents by Annie Leibovitz cost $100,000.
Despite the high stakes, there were still lighthearted moments on stage. President Biden joked about his dog Commander, while Colbert teased Obama about his formality. Obama playfully responded, indicating that Colbert’s wife might be the key to another invitation.
