Pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside the residence of University of California–Irvine (UCI) Chancellor Howard Gilman in University Hills on Memorial Day, May 27.
Approximately twenty-five protesters participated in the morning demonstration, displaying graphic signs and using megaphones to convey their message: “Howard Gillman you won’t rest until UCI divests.”
The protest lasted from 8 to 10 a.m. before the demonstrators dispersed voluntarily.
This protest follows the clearance of the UCI Palestine solidarity encampment by law enforcement and the subsequent arrest of numerous protesters on May 15.
Prior to that incident, protesters had occupied the lawn outside the Physical Sciences Lecture Hall for over two weeks, demanding transparency regarding UCI’s financial connections with Israel and calling for divestment from companies engaged in business with Israel. They also urged for an immediate and enduring ceasefire.
