Protests have erupted at over 25 universities in California in recent weeks, demanding a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict. Schools such as USC, UCLA, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, UC Berkeley, Cal Poly Humboldt, Cal State Long Beach, and Stanford University have all seen demonstrations.
While some protests have been peaceful, including student walkouts and rallies at UC Riverside, San Diego State, and Cal Poly Pomona, others have turned violent, resulting in multiple arrests. Law enforcement has been called to intervene at four campuses across the state.
One particularly intense protest at Cal Poly Humboldt led to the arrest of more than 25 individuals after protesters occupied buildings and set up encampments on campus. The demonstration prompted officials to close the campus for the remainder of the semester.
At UCLA, over 200 people were arrested as police dismantled a large encampment made of various materials.
In a separate incident, 93 people were arrested at USC, and 20 protesters were detained at Pomona College after occupying the university president’s office.
Protesters are advocating for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict, which began with Hamas’s attack on Israel, resulting in casualties and hostages. The violence has resulted in numerous casualties on both sides, with Palestinians bearing a significant brunt of the damage.
