Former President Donald Trump has been trying to distance himself from Project 2025, which has become a political liability for Republicans. However, ties between the campaign and Project 2025 continue to surface, including in the acknowledgments page of an upcoming book by one of the lead authors of the arch-conservative manifesto.
The book, titled “Dawn’s Early Light: Taking Back Washington to Save America,” by Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts, caused a media frenzy due to a foreword written by J.D. Vance. Following Trump’s selection of Vance as his vice president, a digital version of the text disappeared from a website used by publishers to share advance copies with book reviewers.
The Intercept has examined a proof of the book’s acknowledgments page. In it, Roberts expresses gratitude to Heritage Foundation colleagues, media personalities, and specifically praises Vance for inspiring millions of Americans with his story and leadership.
While Vance’s foreword, which praises the book for articulating a Christian view of culture and economics, has been made public, the core content of the book, described as the “popular narrative version” of Project 2025, remains undisclosed.
Recent developments have seen organizations involved in drafting Project 2025 distancing themselves from the document. On Tuesday, Paul Dans, the former director of Project 2025, resigned. The Trump campaign issued a statement suggesting repercussions for anyone misrepresenting their influence with President Trump and his campaign.
The book by Roberts identifies institutions that conservatives aim to build, reclaim, or consider too corrupt to salvage. Federal agencies like the FBI and Department of Education, cultural institutions, and more are mentioned in his list.
HarperCollins, the publisher, made changes to the book’s title and cover to remove inflammatory language. The book description previously mentioned burning down institutions to preserve the American Way of life, a sentiment that has since been removed.
In an uncorrected proof of the book, Roberts acknowledges influential figures like Tucker Carlson, Newt Gingrich, and K.T. McFarland for their contributions. Conservative politicians like Rep. Chip Roy and Sen. Mike Lee are also recognized for their vital roles in the book.
Despite the controversy surrounding Project 2025, Roberts remains optimistic about continuing efforts to build a personnel apparatus for policymakers at all levels. The Heritage Foundation and Roberts did not provide immediate comments on the matter.
