Despite the prevalence of screens in our modern world, it is crucial to ensure that the children of today receive the same level of protection as previous generations.

When I was growing up, my world revolved around my neighborhood block and the limited radius I could explore on my trusty pink bicycle. It never extended beyond a few blocks to my best friend’s house, and as we grew older, it rarely ventured to the other side of the globe. However, for kids today, the world is literally at their fingertips. Children and teenagers can instantly communicate with individuals worldwide and access vast amounts of information with just a few taps on their devices.
During my discussions with groups of teenagers, I often highlight the unique advantage they have that previous generations did not—the internet. While we relied on encyclopedias and libraries to bridge the gap between us and the world, today’s youth have the world at their disposal through the digital realm. However, I also caution them about the risks that come with this unprecedented access.
As parents of three children, my husband and I have firsthand experience navigating the challenges of raising kids in a digital age. Monitoring and managing our children’s technology usage has been a constant journey filled with vigilance, concern, and adaptation. Despite our best efforts, we found it challenging to shield our children from the dangers lurking in the vast and ever-evolving digital landscape.
Protecting our children has always been a top priority across generations, but the landscape has shifted significantly. In the past, parents focused on safeguarding their children from physical threats, whereas today, they must also navigate the digital realm to ensure their safety. This task is made even more challenging by the influence of Big Tech, which often prioritizes profit over child safety.
With a simple click, children today can be exposed to a myriad of harmful content, including substance abuse, suicidal thoughts, exploitation, and dangerous online trends. Instead of fostering positive connections and promoting the well-being of children and teens, the digital world can lead to increased isolation, depression, and anxiety.
During my time in Congress, I have met with parents who have endured the devastating loss of a child due to harmful online content. These families have been forever changed by their children’s online interactions, leading to tragic outcomes. Their stories serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need to protect children from these dangers.
A similar bill passed the Senate with an overwhelming 91–3 vote. Under KOSA, Big Tech companies are required to take measures to prevent harm and protect children from exploitation and stalking on their platforms. Parents will have access to more tools for monitoring and managing their child’s online safety and internet usage. The Act also holds Big Tech accountable by mandating an annual public report identifying risks of harm to minors. Additionally, the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Education will provide guidance on compliance and address emerging risks to minors.
I urge the House to bring this bill to the floor for consideration; the time for action is now. While screens dominate our world, the children of today deserve the same level of protection as previous generations. In fact, the children of the 21st century require heightened protection and swift action more than ever before.
