The Republican Party of Puerto Rico held a district assembly on Sunday and unanimously awarded all 23 national delegates to former President Donald Trump.
About 77 percent of the 1,340 members of Puerto Rico’s Republican Party participated in the caucus-style vote, according to Angel Cintron, the party’s leader.
The delegates chosen will pledge their votes at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in July. Trump secured the party’s nomination earlier this year.
Puerto Rico, as a U.S. territory, does not participate in the presidential elections but does vote in primaries for the eventual nominees.
The political landscape in Puerto Rico revolves around the beliefs about the island’s political status: statehood, independence, or the territorial status quo. Some prominent members of the Republican Party in Puerto Rico had expressed their lack of support for Trump ahead of the district assembly.
