Rape is on the rise in New York City, with a 13% increase so far this year compared to last year, according to data from the NYPD.
Reports of rape have reached 1,218 incidents as of September 22, up from 1,077 during the same period last year.
Over the past 28 days, the number of rapes has increased by 27%, with 157 incidents reported compared to 124 in the same period in 2023.
While rape is increasing, other violent crimes are decreasing. Murder rates have dropped by 10% this year, from 302 to 271, and the number of shooting victims has decreased by 5% from 870 to 830, according to the data.
Rape arrests have increased by 2% this year compared to last year but are down by 26% from the same point five years ago.
