Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) announced his challenge against Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) for the top Democrat spot on the House Judiciary Committee in Washington. Raskin, the current ranking member on the House Oversight Committee, made the decision after consulting with colleagues. He emphasized the importance of the committee’s role in addressing issues with President-elect Donald Trump back in the White House and the GOP retaining its majority in the House.
Raskin highlighted the committee’s significance in defending freedoms, rights, and democracy itself. He called on House Democrats to defend constitutional democracy and cited his qualifications, including his role in Trump’s second impeachment trial and serving on the House select committee to investigate Jan. 6. Raskin expressed concerns about potential actions by the Trump administration using the Justice Department and FBI for mass deportations and political persecution.
Despite running against Nadler, Raskin expressed “boundless admiration” for him, referring to him as a friend and praising his commitment to the Democratic vision of government for the common good. Raskin emphasized his willingness to seek Nadler’s counsel if chosen for the responsibility in the 119th Congress. The Epoch Times attempted to reach out to Nadler’s office for his reaction but did not receive a response at the time of publication.
