One of the most popular posts on Wellness Mama is my remineralizing toothpaste. I’ve received numerous emails from people who have switched to it and love the results. After successfully remineralizing my teeth and reversing cavities, I became a believer in natural toothpaste!
While my homemade toothpaste has been effective, it can leave residue on sinks and may not be suitable for septic systems due to the coconut oil content. I wanted to find a way to incorporate the benefits of healing clays into our oral care routine, leading to the creation of this remineralizing tooth powder. It’s simpler to make than homemade toothpaste and allows for the use of ground herbs and spices instead of essential oils if desired.
Choosing a Natural Toothpaste
With the increasing availability of natural toothpaste options on the market, it’s easier to find fluoride-free, sulfate-free, and natural ingredient-based products. While some are better than others, there are quality options available. You can compare different natural toothpastes in this article or explore the toothpaste I helped develop (including tooth whitening and kid-friendly options).
Despite the variety of commercial options, I still prefer DIY products in my bathroom for the ability to customize my oral care products.
Why Tooth Powder?
Tooth powder offers a less messy alternative to traditional toothpaste, making it convenient for travel or outdoor activities like camping. It also has a longer shelf life as it does not contain liquids.
The primary ingredient in this tooth powder is bentonite clay, known for its detoxifying properties and mineral content. Bentonite clay can help remove toxins and heavy metals while providing essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, and silica for tooth health.
Bentonite clay’s unique properties allow it to attract and trap toxins, promoting oral health benefits. It can be safely used in the mouth as long as it’s food-grade bentonite clay. The clay’s lead content is naturally occurring but bound within the clay structure, making it safe for internal use.
Other ingredients in the tooth powder support a healthy oral microbiome and contribute to fresh breath. The blend of herbs and minerals helps combat bad breath and leave the mouth feeling clean.
Healthy Tooth Powder Ingredients
- Baking soda: Removes stains, whitens teeth, and supports a healthy mouth pH.
- Calcium Carbonate powder: Provides calcium for enamel strength and reduces tooth sensitivity.
- Ground cloves: Antioxidant, antimicrobial, and breath freshening properties.
- Cinnamon: Antimicrobial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory benefits.
- Mint: Antimicrobial, soothing, and breath freshening properties.
- Xylitol: Sweetener with oral health benefits like fighting plaque and cavities.
Adding Essential Oils
Essential oils can enhance the oral health benefits of the tooth powder. While optional, they offer potent antimicrobial properties. A few drops of essential oils can be added to the powder for increased efficacy.
How to Use Tooth Powder
To use the tooth powder, place a small amount in your palm and dip a wet toothbrush into the powder. Brush as usual and rinse with water. The powder can be used daily by adults and children, followed by mouthwash or flossing if desired.
Shelf Life and Storage
Properly stored, the tooth powder can last for several years. Keep it away from direct light and heat to maintain its efficacy. Avoid getting the jar wet to prevent introducing bacteria. Always dispense a small amount of powder into your palm before use.
Oral Health Regimen
By following a comprehensive oral health regimen and using mouth-healthy products, you can maintain healthy and white teeth. While my routine may vary, I prioritize foods that support oral health and incorporate beneficial products like Wellnesse toothpaste.
