Republican Rep. Dan Newhouse, who finished second in the Washington state primary, voted to impeach Trump in 2021. Newhouse, a former state legislator and state cabinet member, has represented Washington state’s Fourth Congressional District since 2015. He survived a primary challenge against opponents backed by former President Donald Trump, finishing second in the nonpartisan blanket primary with 24.5 percent of the vote. Newhouse will face Trump-endorsed Republican candidate Jerrod Sessler in the general election, setting up a Republican versus Republican matchup. The district is heavily Republican, with a Cook Partisan Voting Index score of R+11. Despite the primary results being called on Aug. 7, Sessler’s and Trump’s campaigns celebrated Sessler’s victory ahead of time, with Trump suggesting that his endorsement was decisive. In 2022, Trump endorsed Newhouse’s opponent, but Newhouse survived the primary challenge and went on to win the general election with 66.5 percent of the vote. Newhouse’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment by publication time.
