A Republican legislator in Florida surrendered herself on Thursday after being charged with felony forgery in connection with her administrative role at a private Christian school.
State Representative Carolina Amesty, 29, was indicted by the Orange County grand jury on four felony counts, including forgery, illegal notarization of her own signature, and falsely certifying a notary signature.
“After receiving information about potential criminal activity from a concerned citizen, we conducted a thorough investigation in collaboration with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The grand jury reviewed the evidence and decided to indict based on the facts presented,” Bain explained.
The Epoch Times reached out to Amesty’s office for comment.
“The timing of this prosecution, just before absentee ballots are sent out, is based on inaccurate reports from a biased source regarding a notarization issue that has not been disputed in any way,” the campaign stated.
“Rep. Amesty is eager for a swift trial, anticipates her day in court, and is confident of her exoneration in the public eye.”
Each third-degree felony charge could result in up to five years in prison and $5,000 in fines.
Elected in 2022, Rep. Amesty is seeking reelection for District 45, located west of Orlando.
Following the indictment, Florida Democratic Party chair Nikki Fried called for Rep. Amesty’s resignation.
“The charges against Carolina Amesty are grave and cast doubt on every decision she has made on behalf of her constituents,” Fried remarked.
