West Virginia Democratic mayor Glenn Elliott has received an endorsement from outgoing Democratic Senator Joe Manchin as his potential successor in the race for the United States Senate seat. Mr. Manchin expressed his support in a video message on Mr. Elliott’s campaign website, highlighting his determination and commitment to fighting for West Virginia’s interests in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Elliott, a 7th generation West Virginian and current mayor of Wheeling, has been recognized for his efforts in revitalizing downtown, creating jobs, and reducing crime rates in the city. He was honored as “Mayor of the Year” by the West Virginia Municipal League in 2022.
Mr. Manchin’s decision not to seek reelection in 2024 has opened up the Senate seat, with Mr. Elliott stepping in to continue the legacy of serving the state. The mayor’s interest in running for the Senate was sparked by Mr. Manchin’s resignation, and after careful consideration and consultation with state leaders, he made the decision to enter the race.
In the Democratic primaries on May 14, Mr. Elliott will be competing against opponents Zach Shrewsbury, a Marine Corps veteran, and Don Blankenship, a former coal executive. The winner of the primaries will face either Republican Gov. Jim Justice or U.S. Rep. Alex Mooney in the general election.
