Ms. Shanahan expressed her intention to support Congress members safeguarding Constitutional freedoms in a social media post on X (formerly Twitter) on May 9. She highlighted Rep. Massie as the first on her list due to his dedication to upholding the Constitution.
Rep. Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, recently aligned with Rep. Greene in an effort to remove Speaker Mike Johnson from his position. He is recognized as one of the most conservative members of the House, with the Conservative Political Action Committee ranking him as the fifth most conservative Representative.
After the failed attempt to oust Speaker Johnson, Rep. Massie voiced concerns about America’s trajectory, citing unsustainable borrowing, ongoing conflicts, and diminishing rights like free speech and privacy. He emphasized the influence of a unified political entity controlling the nation.
Ms. Shanahan did not elaborate on her choice to support Rep. Massie or mention other Congress members she intends to donate to.
Shanahan’s Previous Contributions
In March, Ms. Shanahan made a significant $2 million contribution to Team Kennedy for the vice presidential candidacy. This donation marked the largest single contribution to the Kennedy campaign during that month, surpassing other fundraising efforts.
As a lawyer, entrepreneur, and investor, Ms. Shanahan, formerly married to Google co-founder Sergey Brin, has a history of supporting Democratic candidates, including President Joe Biden and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. She has also contributed to campaigns of Democrats like Pete Buttigieg and Marianne Williamson.
In 2020, she donated $25,000 to the Biden Victory Fund and supported Mr. Kennedy’s campaign during the Democratic presidential primary. Additionally, she played a role in funding American Values 2024 and was involved in creating a Super Bowl television advertisement.
Ms. Shanahan, a longtime donor to Democratic presidential campaigns, established the Bia-Echo Foundation, focusing on reproductive longevity, criminal justice reform, and environmental sustainability. She expressed interest in further backing RFK Jr. for president, citing his alignment with her values on environmental health, agriculture, and social justice.
She emphasized her decision to support Mr. Kennedy as an independent candidate due to a perceived lack of leadership in the White House addressing issues she cares about deeply. Her core political beliefs center on serving peace and assisting those in poverty.
