Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced on Aug. 23 that he is suspending his campaign and throwing his support behind former President Donald Trump. Kennedy cited relentless censorship and media control as reasons for ending his bid for the presidency. He expressed that he could not in good conscience continue his campaign without a realistic path to victory.
Kennedy, 70, stated that he was endorsing Trump due to their alignment on key issues. This decision followed speculation about the future of his campaign, as his running mate had hinted at the possibility of dropping out and supporting Trump earlier in the week.
Financial troubles and a dip in the polls contributed to Kennedy’s decision. His campaign committee revealed a significant debt, prompting the suspension of campaign activities.
Despite initial reports of endorsing Trump, Kennedy clarified in a court filing that he was withdrawing his name from battleground state ballots to avoid spoiling the election. He encouraged voters in those states to choose other candidates.
Kennedy highlighted his alignment with Trump on various issues like ending wars, addressing childhood epidemics, securing the border, and protecting freedom of speech. Trump, in turn, welcomed Kennedy’s support at a campaign event in Arizona.
In response to Kennedy’s announcement, the Democratic National Committee expressed relief that he was dropping out of the race, calling him a failed fringe candidate. The Harris campaign reached out to Kennedy’s supporters, emphasizing unity and common goals.
Kennedy emphasized the importance of addressing chronic diseases in the United States, pointing out the high mortality rate and the prevalence of obesity and other health issues. He concluded his speech by underlining the need to tackle the chronic disease crisis, which was a primary reason for his presidential bid.
Kennedy stated, “I assure you that within two years, we will witness a significant reduction in the burden of chronic diseases.” He added, “If President Trump is re-elected and fulfills his promises, the overwhelming burden of chronic diseases in this nation will vanish.” Janice Hisle, Austin Alonzo, and John Haughey collaborated on this report.
