In a letter sent to Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle, RNC counsel Todd Steggerda highlighted the “rapidly deteriorating” security climate at the July convention. Despite efforts to work with the Secret Service, the RNC’s concerns remain unaddressed. The committee emphasized the need to relocate the protest area to mitigate potential security risks and ensure peaceful assembly during the event.

Law enforcement officials later identified the man and confirmed his death due to the injuries sustained. While the incident was not believed to be related to President Trump’s trial, it raised concerns about security in the area.
Following the incident, the NYPD announced plans to reassess security measures in collaboration with federal partners. The RNC’s headquarters also faced a security scare after receiving suspicious substances addressed to President Trump, prompting a brief lockdown that was later cleared.
