Rotating outages were experienced by residents in Alberta after a second electrical grid alert was issued this week, according to the Alberta Electric System Operator.
The organization reported that a grid alert on April 5 resulted in rotating outages across the province due to a shortage of electricity supply.
Ms. Samaroden explained, “It is truly a combination of many things that occurred that got us into the rotating outage situation.” One of the contributing factors was a plant going offline, reducing the electricity in the grid.
She assured that the system should return to normal operating conditions by the weekend.
Premier Danielle Smith emphasized her government’s commitment to safeguarding the provincial electricity supply.
“Our government is committed to protecting Alberta’s grid and ensuring our province continues to generate reliable baseload power both now and in the future,” Ms. Smith added.
January Alerts
Similar issues were faced by Alberta’s grid in January during a cold snap.
Alberta’s government has been vocal against the federal government’s net-zero electricity grid requirement by 2035, advocating for natural gas usage and questioning the adequacy of renewables to meet demand.
