Russian special forces successfully rescued two prison guards and neutralized six ISIS-affiliated inmates who had taken them hostage at a detention center in Rostov, as reported by Russian media outlets.
The men involved in the hostage situation were convicted of terrorism-related charges and were linked to ISIS, the group responsible for a recent attack on a Moscow concert hall.
The hostage takers, one of whom displayed ISIS insignia, escaped through the window bars using ropes before seizing the guards with weapons. Despite demanding safe passage out of the prison during negotiations, the situation escalated when Russian special forces decided to intervene.
The operation ended with the elimination of the criminals, as confirmed by Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service. The freed guards were unharmed, and ambulances were seen at the scene.
ISIS, once a prominent terrorist organization in Iraq and Syria, has since fragmented into regional factions responsible for various attacks worldwide. The group ISIS-K claimed responsibility for a deadly attack at Crocus City Hall in Moscow earlier this year.
Reports suggest that the hostage takers hailed from Ingushetia, a southern Russian republic, with three of them previously apprehended for plotting an assault on a court in Karachay-Cherkessia.
